Typhochlaena

Typhochlaena is a small genus of dwarf arboreal tarantulas found only in Brazil, where they inhabit the Atlantic Forest and neighbouring habitats in the east and north-east of the country. Commonly known as jewel tarantulas, Typhochlaena species are among the smallest and most colourful New World tarantulas, and they are highly prized by enthusiasts around the world.

Unlike most arboreal tarantulas, which spin open silk tubes among the branches, Typhochlaena species live a unique trapdoor lifestyle on tree trunks. They build silk-lined retreats in crevices and under loose bark, sealed with a camouflaged lid of silk and debris. From behind this door they ambush passing prey before vanishing back into their hidden retreat. Their small size, secretive habits and slow growth make Typhochlaena tarantulas a true specialist's genus and a real treat to keep and observe.

The genus currently contains five described species: Typhochlaena seladonia, the type species first described in 1841, together with Typhochlaena amma, Typhochlaena costae, Typhochlaena curumim and Typhochlaena paschoali, all described by Rogério Bertani in 2012. Typhochlaena seladonia, the Brazilian Jewel, is the best known in the hobby, while Typhochlaena costae, the Brazilian Pink Punk Jewel, is admired for its vivid pink and metallic colouring. Typhochlaena cf. paschoali remains one of the rarest and most sought-after forms available to keepers.

One of the most appealing aspects of Typhochlaena tarantulas is their colour. Despite reaching only a few centimetres in leg span, many species display brilliant metallic greens, golds, pinks and oranges across the carapace and abdomen, often broken up by bold stripes and chevrons. It is this combination of tiny size and jewel-like colouring that gives the genus its common name.
