About Grammostola Tarantulas
Grammostola is a genus of New World terrestrial tarantulas native to southern South America, with species found across Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Brazil. In the wild they live in grasslands, scrubland and rocky hillsides, sheltering in burrows, beneath stones and in abandoned rodent burrows. The genus includes some of the best-known pet tarantulas in the world, most famously the Chilean Rose Hair, and Grammostola species have long been recommended as ideal beginner tarantulas thanks to their calm temperament and hardy nature.
Grammostola tarantulas are famously slow growing and exceptionally long-lived, with females often living for 20 years or more in captivity, making a Grammostola a true long-term companion. They are heavy-bodied, robust spiders that spend much of their time sitting out in the open, which makes them easy to observe and a rewarding display species. Like most New World tarantulas they carry urticating hairs on the abdomen as a defence, although most Grammostola are far more likely to walk away than show any aggression.
The genus contains a wide range of species, several of which are firm favourites in the UK hobby. Grammostola rosea, the Chilean Rose Hair, is available in two popular forms: the red colour form (RCF), often known as Grammostola rosea red, with its rich pink-red hairs, and the normal colour form (NCF), with softer grey-brown tones and a subtle pink sheen. Grammostola pulchra, the Brazilian Black, is prized for its deep, velvety jet-black colouring and gentle nature, while Grammostola grossa, the Guarani Giant, is a large, heavy-set species with warm tawny-brown colouring that makes an impressive centrepiece in any collection.
For collectors, the rarer Chilean forms are a real highlight. Grammostola sp. Maule, originating from the Maule Region of central Chile, is a stunning, copper-toned relative of the Rose Hair that remains scarce in the hobby. Alongside it sit other sought-after Grammostola such as Grammostola sp. North (Northern Gold) and Grammostola pulchripes (Chaco Golden Knee), each offering the classic Grammostola temperament with its own distinctive colouring.
For tarantula keepers, Grammostola care is refreshingly simple. They are housed in a terrestrial enclosure with more floor space than height, a good depth of dry substrate, a hide such as a piece of cork bark and a shallow water dish. Most species are comfortable at normal UK room temperatures and prefer drier conditions, and adults may go through long periods of fasting, which is completely normal for the genus. Because they grow so slowly, captive-bred Grammostola slings are always in demand and offer excellent value for keepers happy to raise them up.
Whether you are researching Grammostola tarantula species, looking for information on Grammostola care, comparing Grammostola rosea red and NCF, browsing Grammostola slings, juveniles and adults for sale in the UK, or searching for the perfect beginner tarantula, exploring the individual species is the best way to find the right Grammostola for your collection.
